Civil Engineer

“Transform your ideas into inspiring buildings!”

Civil engineers are responsible for the world’s most inspiring buildings, bridges and roads, as well as some of the less thrilling – yet no less structurally sound – buildings, bridges and roads. Some of these incredible structures include the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and “Spaghetti Junction” in Birmingham, England, which wouldn’t be possible without talented civil engineers. Civil engineering dates back centuries and is one of the largest sectors in the engineering field. Civil engineers are involved with the projects (construction of roads, dams, bridges, etc.) at every step, from the beginning designs to the construction to the oversight when the project is complete.

  1. Degrees, Programs & Top Indian Colleges

  2. Bachelor's Degree Course (4 years): B. Tech. (in Civil Engineering)

A bachelor degree in engineering is the minimum requirement to become a qualified civil engineer. Candidate must have passed class 12th exam with science stream (PCM). One must also clear state or national level entrance exams for engineering like AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Exams), JEE Main (Joint Entrance Exam Main), AICET (All India Common Entrance Test) etc.

  3. Master's Degree Course (2 years): M. Tech. (in Civil Engineering)

After graduation in civil engineering, one can take an M Tech / ME degree course in any specialization of Civil Engineering, which is of 2 year duration. One can also take up the equivalent MS degree course offered by foreign universities and select institutions in India. Some institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology offer an integrated dual degree combining B. Tech. (civil engineering) and M. Tech. (civil engineering specializations) which is of 5 year duration. MSc degree holders in Physics/Mathematics (or other disciplines relevant to the specialisation) with 1 to 2 years experience in civil engineering related fields may also be granted admission to MS courses in civil engineering in some institutions.

  1. A perceptual and sharp mindset are the key elements!

Civil engineering is a broad field. Specialties include architectural, structural, transportation, traffic, water resources and geotechnical engineering. Environmental engineering is another specialty, and it uses engineering principles to both protect the health of nature and people. Civil engineers may work for state or local governments or in the private sector at consulting or construction firms. Some civil engineers hold supervisory or administrative positions, while others pursue careers in design, construction or teaching. Job responsibilities include analysis – especially in the planning stage – of survey reports and maps. A civil engineer's duties may also include breaking down construction costs and considering government regulations and potential environmental hazards. Civil engineers also perform experiments, whether that's testing soils to determine the strength of a project's foundation or assessing building materials to determine whether, for instance, concrete or asphalt would work best for a certain project. They also need financial acumen, since they provide cost estimates for equipment and labor, as well as knowledge of software programs for use in planning and designing systems and structures.
