Zoology is the branch of biology that studies animals, hence, zoologists study animals and their equation with the environment. They study their physical characteristics, diets, and behaviors. They study various animals, both in their natural habitats and in captivity in zoos and aquariums. They may specialize in studying a particular animal or animal group. Efforts of a zoologist are also critical in protecting endangered species and other wildlife from habitat loss, disease, invasive species, and climate change. Zoologists usually work in zoos as directors, curators or zookeepers. Directors are responsible for fundraising and public relations; curators oversee the functioning of the zoo and the acquisition of animals, and zookeepers are responsible for the daily hands-on care of the animals. Increasingly, some zoologists are working in areas of conservation, breeding and the protection and preservation of species. Mammalogists study Mammals, Ornithologists study Birds, Ichthyologists study Fish, and Herpetologists study Reptiles.
